Rollover - Canvas Bulk Import

About the Bulk Import

The Bulk Import allows you to preload Canvas course, student and timetable data into the aPlus+ Attend HE LTI and keep that data up to date regardless of whether teachers click through to attendance for those Canvas courses.

The Bulk Import is optional and recommended in most situations.

If you do not use the Bulk Import, then Canvas courses are only synced with Attend HE when the LTI is accessed from each course. This means that if a teacher has not clicked on attendance for their Canvas course, then Attend HE may not be aware of that course and won’t be aware of changes to timetable data or student enrolments.

The Bulk Import is necessary when using scanning, or if you would like to be able to report on which classes/courses are not taking attendance.

Navigation

Bulk Import can be located in your admin portal.

Navigate to Admin > Plug-Ins > Canvas, then select “Canvas Bulk Import”

  1. Use the date filter to identity current courses, or courses that do not have a term or start date defined
  2. Work down the ‘Select to import’ list, selecting the courses that should be imported. This is typically all courses, except for the sandboxes, training and blueprint courses. Do not select the ‘Import from Canvas Calendar’ or ‘Import event from SIS’ if your timetables are created manually by instructors.
  3. (Ignore this step If you are creating timetables manually) Select the top ‘select all’ box, of the chosen event import method. This will select only the courses that had already been selected in the first column.

Scheduling the Bulk Import

Once you have completed and run the bulk import for the first time, please let your aPlus+ contact know. aPlus+ will schedule this to rerun nightly with no further input from you.

Note that if new courses are added to Canvas, then you will need to update and rerun your bulk import. They will otherwise not be added until an instructor clicks through to the the LTI from their Canvas course.
